Although many fine-art papers are made for specific uses, most can be used for a variety of media and techniques. The categories below are general classifications. In addition to those listed below, we stock papers that are made specifically for oil painting, acrylic painting, mixed-media, and calligraphy.
We stock watercolor papers in sizes from 4”x6” up to 36”x48” (oversized sheets and rolls may need to be ordered), weights from 90lb to 300lb, and surfaces including cold press (textured), rough, and hot press (smooth). In addition to single sheets, we stock a wide variety of pads, sketchbooks, blocks (multiple glued edges) and rolls. Brands we carry include:
Arches: 100% cotton paper from France. The animal-based gelatin sizing allows a great deal of layering, reworking, and lifting before the paper itself fully absorbs the paint. (140lb and 300lb in textured cold-press and smooth hot-press surfaces)
Moulin Du Roy (Canson): The same paper as Arches, but with a vegetable-based sizing that helps protects paper from getting overly wet while providing more immediate access to the paper fiber itself.
Khadi: 100% cotton paper from India made by hand using sustainable water-saving practices. The irregular rough texture and very absorbent surface give paintings an almost print-like quality as colors set into the fibers more readily.
Fabriano Artistico: A professional-grade cotton paper from Italy with a vegetable-based sizing that provides an absorbent surface while minimizing feathering and bleeding. (140lb and 300lb weights)
St. Armand: A crisp hand-made cotton paper with a slightly rough surface and internal sizing from La Papeterie St-Armand, an artisan paper mill in Montreal. In addition to standard-sized sheets, St. Armand papers include unusual shapes and sizes such as circles and long rectangles.
Among the papers we stock in a variety of colors, weights, and sizes for various printmaking methods are: Rives BFK, Stonehenge, Strathmore/Riverside, Revere, Crane’s Lettra, Zerkall Nideggen, Canson Edition, Arches 88, Coventry Rag, Hahnemule Bugra, Magnani Pescia, Johannot, Murillo, Masa, numerous handmade Japanese papers (see below), and beautiful neutral and colored sheets from artisan paper mill La Papeterie St-Armand in Montreal.
DRAWING + ILLUSTRATION:
In addition to Stonehenge, Canson Edition, St-Armand and other papers listed under “Printmaking,” the papers we stock for drawing with graphite, charcoal, pastel, and ink include bristols (smooth, vellum, and plate surface), Ingres, Strathmore gray and tan toned papers, Fabriano Elle Erre and Tiziano, Richeson sanded pastel papers, bond, newsprint, tracing, Clearprint 100% cotton drafting vellum, and a variety of rolls for working in larger formats. Many of these drawing papers are also available in sketchbooks and pads.
DECORATIVE + COLORED:
Exquisite and unusual papers for an infinite number of creative uses including collage, bookmaking, printmaking, paper sculpture, and décor projects! These papers come to us from all over the world and showcase the colors, textures, patterns, native fibers, traditions and craftsmanship of countries including Thailand, Nepal, India, Japan, Italy, and France.
JAPANESE HANDMADE PAPERS:
Japanese papers (Washi) deserve their own special category. They’re made primarily from bark fibers such as Kozo (mulberry) and Gampi, whose long fibers give even the thinnest papers a great deal of strength along with the ability to retain their structure when wet. These papers are extremely versatile — with some experimentation to get a feel for how they’ll receive different media, they can be used for drawing, painting, printmaking, bookmaking, folding, and sculpting. In addition to papers in natural colors and textures, we stock hand screen-printed Yuzen Chiyogami and stencil-dyed Katazome-shi.
Made primarily from mulberry (not from rice or rice plants), these quality Chinese papers are made for Sumi painting and brush calligraphy, and are well suited to any use (Chine-colle, rubbings, encaustic layering, collage) requiring thin, translucent, and absorbent paper.
